The T.B. Simon Power Plant provides the Michigan State University campus with nearly all of its energy needs. This involves:

  • operating the power plant,
  • operating the drinking water system,
  • and operating water wells.

These systems provide water, steam and electricity to campus. For routine or special services, complete an online service request.

Preparing campus buildings for cooling

Cooling tower fan at the chilled water plant

As the spring and summer months approach, MSU is transitioning from heating to cooling the buildings on campus. MSU uses steam absorbers to convert steam from the T.B. Simon Power Plant into chilled water to provide cooling for a number of campus buildings. For more information on the process and how employees plan the timing of the switch, click here.
