Business and Personnel

Business and Personnel provides the Physical Plant Division's billing and cost accounting services (including the University's telephone billings), and supports the Division in computer services and human resources specialties. Call 355-3375 ext. 5 to get answers to billing questions.

Custodial Services

Custodial Services provides cleaning services in MSU's academic, athletics, medical, and events buildings; locks and unlocks the buildings; operates swimming pools; replaces light bulbs and tubes; and performs similar minor building maintenance. The department's staff also sets up special events, assembles furniture, and provides heavy trucking, labor, and equipment for certain heavy moving and delivery services.
  • For basic custodial service in buildings, contact the building's head custodian. The custodial staff begins work at 4:30 pm or at 10:00 pm, depending on the building. Many head custodians have a message board or mailbox in the building, or make daily contact with the office of the Dean, Director, or Department Chair.

Engineering and Architectural Services

Engineering and Architectural Services performs planning and analysis for the Physical Plant Division, maintains construction standards and master records of the campus plan, buildings and utility systems, coordinates and inspects construction and alteration projects, and prepares plans and specifications. The department also directs the planning efforts of architects, engineers and landscape architects on capital construction projects. Grounds Maintenance

The Grounds Maintenance Department provides the following services in support of overall University operations: 
  • Maintain all horticultural materials such as turf, trees, evergreens, shrubs, vines, ground covers and flowering materials, including litter and debris control in all out door areas.
  • Provide woody plant specimens from its nursery and greenhouse support for plant materials used in Beal Botanical Garden and the developed campus.
  • Maintain outdoor athletic areas for varsity and intramural sports as well as indoor arenas in Jenison Fieldhouse, IM West Building and Breslin Student Events Center.
  • Maintain roads, bridges, walks, terraces and ornamental pools.
  • Maintain directional traffic and informational signs.
  • Execute site restoration and landscaping work at new buildings and for other campus improvements.
  • Maintain Forest Akers East & West Golf Courses (36 holes).
  • Operational and service equipment used in grounds maintenance operations.

    Maintenance Services

    Maintenance Services operates and maintains academic buildings, maintains the utility distribution systems, and performs related services. A wide variety of skills and materials in metal working, electrical, electronics, broadband cable, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, carpentry, roofing, masonry, locksmith, painting, and glazing trades are available for departmental facilities and projects.
    • Maintenance staff is on duty Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 1:00 am (ET), to respond to problems and emergencies. Call (517) 353-1760 to get immediate service.
    • After hours, all day Saturday, Sunday and holidays, dial "0"; the University operator will dispatch help.

    The Power and Water Department

    The Office of Recycling and Waste Management provides Recycling and Waste removal services to the campus community.

    Telecommunication Systems

    Telecommunication Systems manages the University's voice and broadband systems, including directory information assistance.

    Transportation Services

    Transportation Services operates Campus Charter Bus Services; rents and leases sedans, station wagons, vans and trucks to departments and individuals for University business; operates a fueling and vehicle repair station; and maintains data, titles, and licensing for the vehicle fleet. Campus shuttle service and special transportation services are operated by Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) at 394-1100.
