Phys Planters quickly repair Shaw Lane water main leak
By John Frawley
Maintenance Mechanic II Ken Jakus was the first on the scene of the water main leak south of Spartan Stadium, arriving on site Thursday night and taking measures to control the flow of water and traffic for the morning of Friday, March 20. On-site repairs began that night, and the problem was solved without disruption of water to any buildings.
Sections of Shaw Lane had to be closed off to traffic as water ran along the side of the road. Jakus, along with Maintenance Mechanic II Dean Fischer, Pipefitter I Jason Pohl, Trades Aide Jason Crowell, Maintenance Mechanic I Kevin Lawrence and Crafts Worker III Brenda Sisung helped stop the water flow at its source by digging down to the leaking pipe and placing a stainless steel clamp on it. After plugging the leak, the team refilled the hole.
Yet there was still work to be done. Asphalt had to be placed over the site of the hole before traffic could continue as usual. Landscape Services' Grounds/Site Construction Group Leader Kim Consavage and Landscape Architect Adam Lawver patched the hole on Monday, March 23, to finish up the repairs.
