Phys Plant employees recently worked to make sure MSU's hardwood will be ready for the upcoming basketball season.
Crews repainted and refinished the varsity basketball floor at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center between Aug. 7 and 14.
Custodial Supervisor David Jones and his crew, which consisted of Custodian IIs Todd Tyler and Nabil Ashi, Custodian III Sean Fox-Elster, Custodian IVs Jeff Dollarhite and Denise McCarthy worked overtime to buff the floor to ensure it would be ready for the painting portion of the project. They worked their standard shift from 10 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Thursday, only to take a short break and work from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Friday.
Painter II Marsha Clark and her crew, which consisted of Trades Aide John Rowe, Crafts Worker IVs Kathryn Durkee and Leah Strahan, and Crafts Worker IIIs Elie Durkee, Nick Hall and Kyle McMahon, spent two days painting the floor after it was buffed. She and her crew have perfected what it takes to make sure the floor is ready.
“We taped off all the white one day, painted that and the next day taped on the white and painted the green,” said Clark.
Once the paint dried, Jones and his crew sealed the floor, which was another two-day process.
“These employees do about six gyms a summer," said Jones. "They give up their summer vacations to do this. It takes a special group of people to complete this [job].”
