MSU Bikes had an opportunity to work with the 4-H Exploration Days development program this summer. Marketing and Sales Coordinator Tim Potter and Laborer II Jon-Marc Eyer ran four sessions of “Bikes Maintenance” classes from June 24 to 26.
“We are trying to give the kids information and advice about maintaining their bikes,” said Potter. Changing tires and tubes, adjusting brakes and gears were just some of the skills taught during the sessions.
“The kids are learning how to take care of their bikes and make some of their own small repairs,” said Potter. “They were able to bring their own bikes in and practice the techniques we have been talking about.”
The students present ranged in ages from 11 to 17. “Most of the kids seem to really be enjoying it. They have been telling us about the maintenance they have already done to their bikes,” said Potter.
Matt Pape, one of the students attending the sessions found the class to be very useful. “My friend and I go long-distance biking, so I figured [this class] would come in handy,” said Pape.
Although their primary mission is to service the campus and community of East Lansing, MSU Bikes was happy to work with the 4-H program that brings in kids from all over Michigan to learn about an array of project areas.
“This was our first year doing this,” said Potter. “The sessions filled up so fast that we hope to have more sessions available next year.”
