Landscape Services is finding new and innovative ways to put bicycles to work.
So far, the bikes are proving to be more versatile than they look.
“I can put a trailer hitch on the back and carry a wagon,” said Landscape Services Manager Gerry Dobbs during a demonstration of the bike’s capabilities. “I can put my tools in the box and lock it up, or I can take the box off and put a weed-eater or push-mower on it and go from site to site.”
And going from “site to site” with such ease is really what makes the bikes an attractive alternative to the pick-up trucks and golf carts previously used by Landscape Services crew members.
“We operate out of several substations throughout the campus as an extension of our building,” said Dobbs. “So, something like this could work well, particularly up in north campus where it’s more congested.”
Professional Aide Adam Kingsbury said there are many benefits in riding bikes to jobs, rather than driving trucks or golf carts.
"I get to exercise and not be cooped up in an office," he said. "Plus, no fuel is used, and I get to take in the campus setting more. I'm just using calories."
Not only have the bikes proved to be veritable workhorses, their emission-free and traffic-proof properties are swiftly speeding Landscape Services toward the greener path to work.
“I enjoy bicycling,” said Dobbs. “I’m hoping other people will, too. We’re going to give it a shot.”
